Enhanced Grid Reliability with Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System
The Challenge
Ålands Elandelslag (ÅEA), is the primary utility provider on the Åland Islands, located between Finland and Sweden. Åland Island’s distribution grid faces unique challenges due to its exposed location. Wind, heavy snow, and sea-crossings create significant operational difficulties, especially in winter. For instance, low-hanging power lines during snowstorms can short-circuit when blown together by the wind. Such faults, known as wire slaps, are especially challenging to locate because they often disappear as wind conditions change. In areas with wildfire risks, wire slap faults can pose additional dangers, such as igniting vegetation fires.
ÅEA needed a solution to pinpoint fault locations quickly to reduce outages and enhance field patrol efficiency.
The Result
By quickly identifying fault locations, ÅEA
- streamlined their field operations,
- reduced response times, and
- minimized disruptions for customers.
“Thanks to Safegrid’s solution, we were able to immediately see the right location of the fault, saving us both time and money.”
Jan Nordström, Team Leader and Technical Project Designer at Ålands Elandelslag.
