The presentation examines the operational challenges of maintaining PTP (IEEE 1588) time synchronization in IEC 61850 digital substations. Svenska kraftnät’s Åker digital substation, this presentation emphasizes the importance of continuous time synchronization monitoring. We outline potential operational challenges, including topology-induced latency errors, silent timing faults hidden behind network redundancy, and long-term clock drift during satellite disruptions. Finally, we share key engineering recommendations.
