Environmental aspects of the production and operation of overhead conductors
The continuous efforts to improve environmental conditions mean that the carbon footprint will be one of the key factors in evaluating the performance of products on the European market in the future. Due to the specific operating conditions of overhead conductors, their environmental impact can generally be divided into two areas: the manufacturing stage and the operational stage. In the first area, the key factors are the base material – primary aluminium (green aluminium production technologies) – and the ability to reuse aluminium from conductors at the end of their service life (circular economy). In both cases, it should also be taken into account that aluminium is a critical material for the European economy and must be managed responsibly. In the second area, the material properties and the conductor's design are key, as they allow for a reduction of energy losses caused by the flow of current through the conductor. Even minor improvements over the 50-year operational life of the conductor result in significant energy savings and, consequently, in reduced operating costs (financial and environmental) for all users. This presentation will give attendees an overview of both areas of environmental initiatives currently being developed by the producer of overhead conductors, the company NPA Skawina Sp. z o.o.
