Harnessing Metering Data for Network Planning: A Practical Approach to MV/LV Transformer Load Modeling

Whether operating the network day-to-day or planning its evolution, DNOs need to accurately estimate the power flowing through their network. The deployment of smart meters is pivotal, as this new data offers ideal raw material to improve load estimation methods. This case study showcases how a predictive model based on daily consumption was developed with a French DNO. The approach enabled the precise identification of overloaded and underutilized MV/LV transformers, leading to optimized asset management and improved investment efficiency, without the need for widespread sensor deployment.
