AI-based Substation Digital Twin implementation at Amprion (TSO)

The energy transition demands the rapid adoption of new technologies to ensure efficient and reliable grid operation. Digital Twins—intelligent systems that connect and contextualize grid data—play a key role. At Amprion, a Digital Twin of a 380/220/110kV substation was developed by integrating multiple data sources, including CIM data, 3D laser scans, device nameplate images, and single-line diagrams, supported by AI technologies. The result is a validated and operational Digital Twin, aligned with the recommendations of the VDE study “The Digital Twin in the Network and Electricity Industry.”
